Abstract:
From comprehensive analysis of observational data of 20 spotless flares observed at Yunnan Observatory during the peak period of 21 solar cycle and of two major spotless two-ribbon flares observed at Purple Mountain Observatory on April 23,1981 and Beijing Observatory on Oct.15,1980,the morphological features of spotless flares are summarized as follows: 1.All spotless flares occured on one or both sides of the quiescent filament extending along the line of zero longitudinal magnetic field H=0.2.The chromospheric fibrils surrounding the filament in a spotless active region underwent a great change prior to the flare onset. The fibrils crossing perpendicular to the long axis of the filament could turn to be parallel or nearly parallel to it during one or two days before the flare occured.3.All spotless flares were associated with the activation of filament pre-existing in this region. In general, the activation preceded the flare by be tween one or two days and a few minutes. It frequently takes the form of expansion, enhanced internal motions and a slow rise into the corona. It is coincident with the result of Dodson and Hedeman.4.The combined analysis of the data of the event on April 23,1981 observed at Purple Mountain Observatory with that observed at Big Bear Obs.indicate that the sudden disappearance of the filament is about two minutes earlier than the flare onset.5.Afew data of the spotless two-ribbon flare that the seeing was very good make known that the ribbons appear to be a chain structure and its expansion velocity is about 5 km/s-30 km/s.On the basis of the Kippenhahn-Schliiter model of filament,we have explained qualitatively these features. From the calculated results of magnetic energy,we think the free energy stored in this sheared field surrounding a quiescent filament can be as much as the released energy in a middle flare which occurs in active region. In accordance with W.Van Tend and M.Kuperus's equilibrium of coronal current, when filament current exceeds the local limit of current the force caused by the non-equilibrium can make the filament current rise and reach a new equilibrium state. This is a good theoretical explanation for the activation of the filament. It is well known that the magnetic configuration of the filament is constantly adjusted in the activation. So it might become unstable under a certain specific physical condition because dense filament matter overlies coronal matter. If geff>0,the magnetic configuration will be unstable and the Kayleigh-Taylor instability would occur. After the instability breaks out, magnetic field lines will reconnect quickly according to Petschek's mechanism. If once the current density inside the sheet exceeds the critical value for developing of micro-turbulence,the flare will occur explosively.

Abstract:
The variations of the interplanetary fluctuations across the shock wave are discussed on the basis of the theory of MHDshock wave. The approximate analysis solution shows that our theoretical results can explain better the statistic results obtained by Belcher and Davis (1971) and Whang (1973) who analysed observation data from Mariner 5 and Explorer 34 in the interplanetary space and the magnetosheath.

Abstract:
Statistical analysis of the X-ray prop erties of 247 quasars in the 0.5-4.5 keVband observed from the Einstein Satellite, are carried out in this paper which is one of a series of papers devoting to the study of X-ray quasars and active galactic nuclei. The following main results are found:1.Among all the 1619 known quasars of various apparent magnitudes and red-shifts (or distances),those detected as X-ray sources are of nearly equal percentages.2.There exists a weak correlation between the optical radiation and the X-ray radiation. The correlation coefficients in some cases are shown in Table 1,which shows clearly that the radio emission with frequencies higher than 2.5 GHz correlates strongly with X-ray radiation, implying that the emitting regions in these three bands (optical, high frequency radio anl X-ray bands) are close to one another in order and that their emitting mechanisms are similar.3.There is a strongly correlation between the radio REW of equivalent widths of the emission lines Hβ and [OIII],and the X-ray luminosity Lx (0.5-4.5 keV) for type I Seyfert galaxies (Fig.10),whose properties are similar to those of radio-quiet quasars. We propose this correlation [equation (5.2)] as a new X-ray luminosity indicator for type I Seyfert galaxies.4.Neither the color index U-Bnor B Vcorrelates with X-ray radiation, but U-Bcorrelates with B-Vweakly.Acknowledgement: One of the authors (H.S.Yang) thanks Dr.G.Burbidge,Director of Kitt Peak National Observatory (Tucson,Arizona,U.S.A.),for many helpful discussions during his stay at KPNOwhere part of this work was done.Yang thanks also Mr.J.Wagner for help in using computer.

Abstract(2142) PDF 313KB(955)
Abstract:
A formula of ponderomotive force of whistler waves has been derived in this paper. It shows that when the wave frequency ω<Ωe/2 (Ωe: the gyro-frequency of the electrons),the electrons intend to move into the region where the wave amplitude is larger. As a result,a density crest is formed along the propagation path of the wave. When ω>Ωe/2,the situation is just reversed, the ponderomotive force intends to sweep out the electrons from the region where the wave field is more intense, resulting in formation of a density through along the propagation path of the wave. Therefore, the Weibel's results are just the special case (ω<<Ωe) of the results presented here.

Abstract:
Self-focusing of whistler waves due to ponderomotive force has been analysed in this paper. The general results have been used to see the possibility of self-focusing of whistlers in the earth magnetosphere. The results show that, for moderate and intense whistlers (the wave electric field>~1mV/m),the self-focusing is possible. Therefore,it may be a nonlinear mechanism for the ducted propagation of such whistlers in the magnetosphere.

Abstract:
Some features of STARE observed convection pattern both at relatively quiet days (1≤Kp≤3) and disturbed days (∑Kp>27) are discussed with simple model method. The electric field variations at quiet days are found to be reasonably in agreement with one of Vasyliunas' models. The observed deviation from the dawn-dusk symmetric pattern can be partly explained by the day-to-night gradient of the ionospheric conductivity. It also implies the existence of asymmetric factors within the magnetosphere. Two simple models are suggested to interpret the westward rotation of the convection pattern during disturbed days. The feature is referred to the effect of the relative intensity of the two field-aligned current regions in one of the models and attributed to the modulation of the ratio between the Hall and Pederson conductivities in another. The comparison between the two is made and it is shown that in order to make clear that which factor is more important the futher understanding of the magnetosphere and the simultaneous observations of E-field,field-aligned current are both necessary.

Abstract(2081) PDF 709KB(905)
Abstract:
A series of ionospheric modification experiments were conducted at the Arecibo Observatory to research the fluctuation of the plasma lines enhanced by the high frequency electromagnetic waves. The temporal fluctuation of the power of enhanced plasma line depends on the average heating power. When the plasma is excited efficiently, the fluctuation repetition frequency increases and the fluctuation becomes erratic and weak with the increase in the average heating power. When the peak power or the pulse length is changed, the fluctuation changes by merging or spliting of the repetition cycles. The fluctuation of ion lines is correlated with that of plasma lines, but has higher repetition frequency than plasma line.An explanation has been suggested for the observed phenomena.

Abstract:
A small piggy back detector system are used to study the reduction of γ-ray background induced by atmospheric neutrons in the type of active shielded γ-ray spectroscopes. The system consists of two φ1"5 ×1"5 NaI erystal units, one of which is surrounded by some neutron shield material. The results of a balloon flight in 1981 are presented. The data show that a shield of 3 cm thick pure parraffin can not reduce the γ-ray background,on the contrary,it may even cause some enhancement.
